Australia has been one of the nations with the strictest Covid-19 restrictions worldwide. The country put an early shutdown on international borders when the pandemic hit in 2020, and after almost two years, it reopened its international borders in February 2022.
With the restrictions easing, the predictions were that the pandemic would be subtle in the upcoming months. However, the infections are again going upscale. Let’s glance at the recent development in Covid-19 cases, the state of reinfections and the new vaccine campaign going across the country.
New Covid-19 wave in Australia?
On 28 June, around 30,000 new cases and more than 70 deaths were reported. Most cases were reported in the national capital, Canberra. Canberra’s health authorities have warned of a new wave of Covid-19 infections. This wave could result from further spread of the Omicron variant or a new variant, which the health specialists are yet to decode.
Specialists have stated that the recent rise in cases could be because of a new wave which may be stretched till July and August. The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) has also set a new record for Covid hospitalisation. There are around 121 people currently admitted to the ACT hospitals, the highest number till now since the start of the pandemic.
The conundrum among the Australian health specialists is that the vaccination rate is going optimum in the country, but cases are still rising. Thus, it has become essential to understand the state of reinfection in the country and what could be its causes and consequences.
COVID-19 reinfection on the rise
South Australia's health statistics have showcased that reinfections have increased by almost 1,000 in the past three weeks. The warnings for the BA.5 wave have been issued, and specialists say that more research on the state of reinfection is needed.
The primary hurdle in the research is that because of multiple variants, it is difficult for health specialists to form an accurate picture of reinfections in the country. They are also concerned that there could be a new variant of Covid-19 soon flowing across, and this new variant could be deadlier than Omicron or Delta. And most importantly, because the restrictions have been lifted, it would get more difficult to tackle the situation.
To deal with the present scenario, Australia has launched a new campaign to spread awareness and cautiousness regarding new Covid-19 cases and the possibility of a new wave altogether.

3rd and 4th vaccine shots
Amid rising cases, the country's government is urging Aussies to get third or fourth vaccine shots. Till now, Australia has had 8 million Covid-19 cases since the start of the pandemic, and according to the country’s officials, the worst phase of Covid-19 for Australia is over. However, health specialists are urging Aussies not to be complacent and get the third or fourth shot done.
Australia’s 95% of the total population in the age group 16 and above is fully vaccinated. However, the sudden rise in cases still spreads the terror across Australian states. Additionally, with the winter flu, the spread of Covid-19 cases may cause a new epidemic of health problems in the country. Thus, it is high time Aussies get back to being cautious and follow COVID-19 guidelines religiously.
